Impressions of Denan by johnmoisan

It was with more than a little apprehension that I decided to go to Denan. After four years of work with the Denan Project, I had become very familiar with the stories and images of the village. I felt I knew what to expect, but I also knew there was no way I could be fully prepared for what I would see and experience. My biggest concern besides coping with our living conditions – I am not nor have I ever been a fan of camping – was the effect this experience would have on me. It is one thing to come to the realization that you are one of the luckiest few in the world. To recognize that you have: access to more water than you need; access to health care which is well beyond a basic standard and whose existence does not hang by a thread; access to food…. food that readily grows in fields, overflows from grocery store shelves and is available for the asking in countless restaurants. It is another to come face to face with a people who have never entertained the possibility that these staples of life could ever be considered as a given.
